EmPro

A new category of legal development
Building the business judgement AI assumes -  but cannot create

AI is removing many of the early-career experiences through which lawyers once developed business judgement: the repeated exposure to real decisions, uncertainty, competing priorities and commercial consequences.

EmPro gives emerging lawyers structured, facilitated access to experienced business leaders and the consequential decisions for which they carried responsibility - building the pattern recognition and reasoning clients value and AI cannot provide.

EmPro – building the essential adviser

The apprenticeship pathway is changing

For generations, emerging lawyers developed business judgement through work that was not designed to teach it.

Research, document review, due diligence and other foundational tasks earned them a place in the room: client meetings, strategy discussions and consequential commercial decisions. Over time, they observed how experienced leaders navigated uncertainty, balanced competing priorities, accepted risk and made trade-offs.

AI is increasingly removing or compressing much of that pathway. Emerging lawyers may become technically capable faster, while receiving fewer opportunities to develop the commercial judgement clients need from essential advisers.

EmPro replaces lost exposure with deliberate development.

A business-judgement development experience

EmPro is a facilitated program in which emerging lawyers examine real consequential decisions with the experienced business leaders who carried responsibility for them.

Across four 90-minute sessions over eight weeks, participants engage with a different leader and decision in each session. They interrogate:

  • The objective the leader was trying to achieve

  • The context and uncertainty surrounding the decision

  • The competing priorities, risks and trade-offs involved

  • The consequences of the decision

  • The role legal advice needed to play

Across leaders, businesses and decisions, participants develop the pattern recognition and reasoning that help them understand clients’ objectives, recognise what matters in context and exercise sound judgement when AI produces an answer.

The room where judgement is formed

Business judgement was not built by document review.

Document review earned young lawyers a seat in the room.

The client meeting.
The strategy discussion.
The consequential commercial decision.

The room where experienced professionals explained not only what they decided, but why.

EmPro restores structured proximity to that judgement.

Build the capability that changes a legal career

Legal knowledge answers legal questions. Business judgement helps a lawyer understand the client’s actual problem.

Participants develop the ability to:

  • See the commercial objective behind a legal instruction

  • Identify the facts, risks and trade-offs that matter most

  • Ask better questions of clients and senior colleagues

  • Give advice that is practical in context, not merely technically correct

  • Assess, contextualise and, where necessary, challenge AI-generated work

  • Build the confidence to contribute earlier and more meaningfully
